Nutrition Section

Jeffco Parents Focus on School Nutrition - Jeffco Parents Focus on School Nutrition was founded by parents of students in the Jefferson County Public Schools district who are concerned about the nutritional well-being of all children. Our goal is to work with the Jeffco Public Schools district, and at the individual school level, in order to continually improve the nutritional quality of all foods offered in Jeffco schools, as well as the level of nutritional education and awareness provided in Jeffco schools.

Jeffco will be the first district in Colorado to pilot on-line applications for free and reduced price meals which should speed up the approval process for parents considerably.

Upcoming changes in the lunch program for next year.

  • Expansion of food bars at secondary level  - added to BYOB we will roll out “Panda Bowl” as school starts – A Panda Express concept with healthy options
  • More local sourcing of products – 2 types of lunch burritos (bean and cheese and chicken and cheese), 2 types of breakfast burritos will be produced locally
  • Blueberry Compote will be produced locally using USDA frozen blueberries – will replace syrup on French Toast and pancakes
  • Produce has been bid with a stated local preference – if local product is available, we want to purchase that – we are requiring the name of the farmer and location to be listed on the invoice.
  • We will begin to replace Styrofoam plates/trays in the middle schools with washable trays.  We will run a pilot with small washable bowls for fruits and vegetables at 8 elementary schools in the fall
  • We have signed a contract with a cleaner and chemical company to provide chemicals for our dish machines and other cleaning needs – the chemicals are all Green Star certified.
  • We are moving away from the “grab and go” style of service on all school levels and begin our “just in time service” a philosophy that allows our staff to serve each and every child as they pass through the hot food line.
  • We have recognized an ever increasing part of our population and are offering a broader selection of vegetarian items; at least 2 vegetarian choices will be available every day.
  • We are moving away from overly processed foods.  Items that will not be seen on menus next year:  Chicken nuggets (only a whole muscle chicken chunk at secondary schools), Breaded Steak Strips.  The following items will be made from scratch at each school:  Mac & Cheese, Chicken/Cheese Quesadillas, Baked Penne Pasta and Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.
  • We now are offering a Universal Free breakfast in the classroom at 14 schools and have plans to add 4 more in the fall.

Units in Good Standing: Please keep your records up to date by filing the following forms by due dates:

  • DUE - Membership Report are due November 1 and February 1
